Celebrating Porsche's 75th Anniversary with a Special Edition Porsche Design Chronograph 1

Like the Porsche 911, the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 is an iconic design piece. Both have stood the test of time and are instantly recognizable. Although Porsche's history stretches back much further, with the release of the 356 No. 1 in 1948, it's the first watch that comes to mind when we think of the brand. The same is true of this watch, the first ever to be coated in black, a very purposeful decision by Ferdinand Alexander "Buzzi" Porsche. The Chronograph 1 also happens to be the first product released by Porsche Design in 1972. Now, with the launch of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 - Porsche 75th Anniversary Edition, everything seems to have come full circle, celebrating three-quarters of the Porsche brand's sports cars!
We could go on and on about Porsche's illustrious history, and as you know, we often do in our weekly Autocar feature, "The Petrolhead Corner." While there's much more to the 75th anniversary of Porsche, we'll focus on this new celebratory swiss watches replica, which builds on the iconic chronograph and adds a unique touch to the wrist.
The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – Porsche 75th Anniversary Edition features the familiar 40mm-wide case. It's bead-blasted to a matte finish and coated with black titanium carbide. The cap-shaped lugs give the case a barrel-like shape, crowned by a solid black-coated bezel. Two chronograph pushers, also coated in black, flank the right crown. The caseback is engraved with a double-sided sapphire crystal, bearing the Porsche 75th Anniversary Edition logo. As you'd expect from a Chronograph 1, the dial is matte black. Inspired by dashboards from the 1960s and 1970s, the design features only the essential elements without diminishing its power. The striking black and white color scheme ensures exceptional legibility. The hands and indices of all subdials are white. The only accent is the central chronograph seconds hand, painted neon orange to mimic the look of a racing tachymeter. To the right is a date/day display window, topped by the strikingly modern PD Porsche Design logo.
Flipping the watch over reveals the Porsche Design Calibre WERK 01.140, a proprietary automatic chronograph movement based on the Valjoux 7750 architecture. It is certified chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Testing Institute (COSC). The movement features a Fuchs-style winding rotor, a nod to the wheels of early Porsche 911s, a design still popular today. The rotor oscillates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour and provides a 48-hour power reserve. In addition to the central hour and minute display, it also displays a small seconds hand and the chronograph, including a 30-minute counter, a 12-hour counter, and a central chronograph seconds hand. The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – Porsche 75th Anniversary Limited Edition comes with two straps: a black perforated leather strap and a black NATO-style strap with a leather lining. These straps feature a red center line, light blue stitching, and black hardware. The fabric strap features black DLC-coated titanium end links and an interchangeable system for easily switching between the fabric and leather straps.
